What is the I love the Smiths AI trend?
By the sorry i lied team ·
The I love the Smiths AI trend recreates the elevator scene from (500) Days of Summer with your own faces. One person stands on the left with big headphones on, music leaking out. The person on the right hears it, says “I love the Smiths”, gets nothing back, says it again louder, and leaves the other one frozen as the doors close.
People also call it the 500 Days of Summer elevator scene, the Tom and Summer meet-cute or the “I said I love the Smiths” meme. It works for any two people who share a taste nobody else gets: friends, coworkers, a couple, your crush.
Where the I love the Smiths line comes from
It is from (500) Days of Summer (2009). On Day 4, Tom stands in the office elevator with The Smiths’ “There Is a Light That Never Goes Out” in his headphones. His new coworker Summer hears it, says “I love the Smiths”, has to say it twice, and walks out.
Searchlight Pictures, the film’s studio, posted the scene on TikTok in February 2024, and the line became a sound people use for any shared taste. In autumn 2026 remakes came back, and in early November AI video sites began turning the elevator scene into a two-photo template.

Both face the camera, one stunned, one pleased, until the take ends.

AI video or filming it yourself?
Filming it yourself means finding an elevator, a second person who can deliver the line, and enough takes to hit every beat of the sound.
This I love the Smiths AI maker re-films the whole take with your two photos instead: the glances, the double line and the frozen stare land where they should, and the sound is already on the file.
